Nerawareta Gakuen effortlessly weaves a story that combines romance, time travel, an impending apocalypse, and growing up into an incomprehensible mess of a film. The film is plagued with aimless direction, among other things, that prevents it from being any more than eye candy. Besides being pretty to look at there’s nothing to be gained from seeing this film that’s a chore to finish.

The premise of Nerawareta Gakuen, which translates to the cooler sounding, but very misleading English title Psychic School War starts out simple. Introducing four characters into what appears will be a romance story with light elements of sci-fi. Following four characters each of whom contain bland characteristics leading to force conflicts that could have been easily…

I literally had no idea what was going on in this film. It was very messy with its story and themes, none of it made sense at times. It also felt pretty long too. The anime visuals were nice to look at, but that was about it.

This was a complete cornucopia of half-baked ideas. Because this was such a mess of a movie, I found myself bored through most of it.

the real psychic school wars were the friends we made along the way or something

  • Review by Selene Rivas ★★½

Gorgeously animated, amazing art and setting direction in general. This movie, visually, is beautiful.

Then we have the plot, a mishmash of the same tired tropes: We have the childhood friend suffering quietly for the dense protagonist, who is in love with the quiet, sensitive bishoujo, who fell in love at first sight with the mysterious transfer student. Then we have psychic powers, impending apocalypse, time traveling, all explained to be some sort of New Age, pseudo philosophical hogwash.

Some great series and movies have taken these tropes and made them interesting, like The Girl Who Jumped Through Time, 5 centimeters per second, or Kimi ni Todoke. In all of these, the character's motivations, while not clearly spelled out, are…

A very high concept teenage romance story involving psychic powers, time travel and actually no wars...
I have a real hard time synopsizing this and am quite sure, I didn't get the whole plot but I guess that's more my fault as I'm not very good at keeping up with these high concept scenarios.
It mostly uses the mechanics of your usual Shôjo manga, indulging in the most colorful visuals and really playing the 'true love' card (quite literally even, at some point) here. I wasn't a huge fan of its look but liked the main characters and their dynamics enough to care and some of the comedy was pretty hilarious.
The plot obviously focuses on communication (issues) and the…

Striking animation, Gorgeous color palette, and a really pretty score is quite literally the only thing this movie has going for it. The plot is riddled with so many tropes and it doesn’t make any sense. None of the characters are necessarily likeable, and while some of the outfits are pretty the design of them overall doesn’t really stand out either.

    Quite a bummer.

  • Review by 45HW1N ★½

Literally didn't understand a thing is this. What was even the motive to make this film.
Story wasn't properly relayed or conveyed. They threw some plot points here and there.
Characters weren't fleshed out so couldn't connect with them even after half the span of its runtime and by the end it felt forced like they had to stretch the runtime because their producer told so.
The only good thing about this was visuals and artstyle. The colors were very good. But this story doesn't deserves this type of animation.
Studio sunrise please stick to making Gundam animes only, its more worth it.

  • Review by ATSteel ★★

Visually luxurious and maddeningly misguided. Understand this is based on a seminal piece of Japanese literature, and nothing but the highest respect for those who can make head or tails of it. This is just over-knotted and peculiarly shallow, both too much and too little, and never finding the purchase you'd want. [D+, 34]
